Today students from Killina School  TY video linked with Dr Tonya Shearer who is a research scientist in the school of Biology at Georgia Tech.

Her research investigates the use of molecular technology to detect and characterize environmental stress responses in corals.

Dr. Shearer brought the topic to life in an engaging presentation followed by a lively question and answer session with the students.

Dr. Shearer also mentioned that she had spent time  in Aquarius .

Aquarius is an underwater ocean laboratory located in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The laboratory is deployed three and half miles offshore, at a depth of 60 feet, next to spectacular coral reefs.

Scientists live in Aquarius during ten–day missions using saturation diving to study and explore our coastal ocean.

You can read more about it by clicking on this link. http://aquarius.uncw.edu/saturation.htm

Thank you Dr Tonya Shearer.

We had four teams competing in the Offaly Post Primary Schools Sportshall Athletics. Two boys and two girls teams from first and second year took part. Congratulations to our first year girls who are county champions.

A team of 32 girls plus subs competed in the annual Pauline Curley Relay Marathon. Well done to the girls on completing the distance in time of 2 hours 16 mins.

Three of our students qualified from the South Leinster Cross Country to the Leinster Finals which were held in Santry. Emily Grennan, 2nd yr, Nicole Cuskelly, 3rd yr and Jason Donegan, 6th yr.

Our senior football team qualified for the semi-final of the Vocational Schools B football with a thrilling 1-8 to 0-8 points win over Grennan College. Trailing at numerous points in the game, Killina showed great battling qualities to stay in touch. Their hard work paid off when Paddy Dunican fisted the ball to the net with seconds to spare to send the game into extra- time.

In extra- time Killina played some great football to lead by 2 points going into the last minute. With their last attack, Grennan won a penalty. Brian Redmond however dived excellently to save with the last kick of the game.

In the semi- final Killina came up against an excellent Rathoath team who ran out winners on a score line of 1-16 to 2-06. Despite constant pressure from the Rathoath team throughout, Killina continued to make attacks and put in a very good performance. Rathoath, later in the week, went on to win the Leinster final and are currently preparing for an All Ireland final.

Overall this was an excellent year for the senior footballers who also qualified for the Leinster League final earlier in the year.
